Avoid Illness
This brief video explains what steps you can take to avoid getting sick.
A brief overview of the main points:
- Wash your hands before touching food
- Wash fruit and veg before eating
- Separate raw meat from other produce.
- If you want to refrigerate food, be sure to do so within 2 hours of cooking or buying it.
Prevent burns or scalds
- Use oven mitts or dry cloth when handling hot objects.
- Be careful when carrying hot containers and don't hurry.
- Lift lids/covers of hot pots/containers away from your body to avoid steam.
- Put food into a pan/pot with a motion away from your body to avoid splashes.
- Don't let handles of containers extend over the edge of the stove or other burners.
- If you have an oil fire: Do not use water! Cover the flames with a fire-smothering blanket or a damp cloth, or a wet chemical extinguisher for a larger fire.
- Seek appropriate medical attention when burned.

Basic knife safety & skill
See in this video how to safely handle a knife.
Other things to remember:
- If there is a spillage - Clean up immediately! Slipping or tripping while carrying a container of boiling liquid will lead to a serious accident.
- Always pay close attention to your food while it's cooking. Never leave it cooking without checking for long periods of time. It wouldn't be ideal to have a kitchen fire!
- The Irish emergency numbers are: 112 & 999. For other countries click here.
